Hen Wrych: A Beautiful Castle Stay in North Wales

The stunning coastline of Northern Wales has no shortage of lovely accommodations, but if you’re looking to live like royalty for a weekend, it’s hard to compete with staying in a castle tower. Situated in the original wall of Gwrych Castle near Abergele and overlooking the 500-year-old Hen Wrych cottage, childhood home of famed poet Felicia Hemans, this lovely location is close to all the action of Conwy and Caernarfon but feels a world away.

The rooms themselves are beautifully decorated and wonderfully cozy, from the stone walls and warm wood-burning stove to the hand-carved staircase winding up the tower’s three floors.

The bedroom contains an Elizabethan-style bed, numerous tapestries, and skylight that bathes the room in natural sunshine.

The bathroom is massive, with a relaxing slipper bath and arched window looking out over the property.

Walking down a narrow nearby lane leads through quiet ancient woodlands to one of the current gates of Gwrych Castle, with periodic sea views through the trees.

I pride myself on finding unique places to stay while traveling in the U.K., but Hen Wrych is really something beyond special.

From the historic location to the comfortable accommodations and the warm welcome from the owners, everything was truly perfect, and I heartily recommend it if you’re planning a few days in North Wales.
